Big Dipper Drive: West to Midwest

So we start the first trip of our journey today – a 6,000+ mile road trip from the West to the Midwest. I have to say, it’s an intriguing thought to be living out of our Subaru for the next few weeks until we take off to India in mid-May. Anyway, here is the route we have planned out:
San Francisco (CA) – Pasadena (CA) – Zion National Park (UT) – Grand Canyon, South Rim (AZ) – Santa Fe (NM) – Stillwater (OK) – Austin (TX) – Houston (TX) – New Orleans (LA) – Memphis (TN) – Nashville (TN) – Louisville (KY) – Bloomington (IN) – Rockford (IL)
You can follow our everlater travel journal to check out our notes, thoughts, photos and misadventures.

I’m sure some of you have been through these places before. If you have any travel tips or suggestions on things to do, see, eat or meet – please shoot us a note here!

Why don’t you include Four Corners Monument too?

Hmm… looks interesting, but it might be too far of a diversion from our route. We’ll make a decision when we’re around there though.

I just want to wish you the best and I will pray you will be safe. Like your dad always said “just go out there and have fun”. Much love and Gods Blessings to you both. XOXO

So glad Luke told me about this site as I have a few suggestions for Memphis, TN! I used to live near there for 6 months and my father still does.

    1) Of course Graceland. But as great as people make it seem, it’s a little pricey for me. I’ve been to it twice now. And it’s neat seeing the house as he lived but you can’t go upstairs and they turned his raquetball room into a record collection room. But seeing his many jumpsuits was funny. You can walk by his grave too.

    2) Civil Rights Museum. I can’t say enough of this museum. They turned the Lorraine Hotel where MLK was shot, into a museum talking about the cause he fought for. Many good exhibits. And you can go across the street to the hotel where the shooter stood and read about his life before and after April 4, 1968.

    3) Beale Street. This is a great nightlife area! I’ve been partying there many times and by far my fav is the dueling piano bar Silky O’Sullivan’s. http://www.yelp.com/biz/silky-o-sullivans-memphis

    4) Pretty much any BBQ place is good in Memphis. I can give you a really good place but it’s not in a touristy part of town. But definitely hit one up.

    5) Peabody Ducks. the Ducks live in the roof of Peabody Hotel and every morning the bellhop leads them down the elevator and on a red carpet to the fountain in the lobby of the hotel. Every evening, the bellhop leads the ducks to the elevator and back up they go for the night! Crowds line up to see the parade. It’s very cute as they waddle down the red carpet quacking at everyone!

P.S. When you drive past Coldwater, MS you’ll be driving by my father’s place!

    Louisville, KY
I used to go to Louisville a few times a year for about 5 years. It’s always great fun. I highly recommend going to Churchill Downs and even though you won’t be there for the Kentucky Derby (unless you ARE going to be there that weekend, then good luck getting tickets), you can still get good seats and watch the horses all day long.

Great stuff on Memphis! Thanks Lindsay. We’ll try to visit as many places above as we can – it might be tough since we’re there only one night. We might get a piece of the Kentucky Derby festivities though. Our friend Jason (usher at our wedding) lives there and he’s helping us with our agenda there.
